Floyd Mayweather Jr. was all smiles as he headed up an escalator with his large entourage, turning to flash a thumbs-up at fans greeting him. Mayweather escaped to fight another night, and the fight may be against the man who came closest to handing him the first defeat of his 16-year pro career. Marcos Maidana nearly did what 45 other fighters couldn't, taking the fight to Mayweather before losing a 12-round majority decision that angered both the Argentine and the fans at MGM Grand arena. Mayweather was hit more than any bout in his career, and needed to rally from the middle rounds on to keep his unbeaten record.

(Reuters) - Undefeated welterweight Floyd Mayweather did all his hard work in the second half of the bout to overcome a stiff challenge from the fast-starting Marcos Maidana and unify two world titles in Las Vegas on Saturday. At the end of 12 bruising rounds, American Mayweather (46-0, 26 KOs) was awarded a majority decision victory, adding the hard-hitting Argentine's World Boxing Association belt to his World Boxing Council title. For the first few rounds, however, it looked as if Mayweather was in serious danger of losing his vaunted unbeaten record against a fighter launching a blizzard of punches and trapping the American against the ropes at every turn. Eventually Mayweather was able to assert control, nullifying Maidana's assault and launching vicious counter-attacks of his own, picking up points with his jab as his opponent sought to bulldoze his way in close.

It might have been the toughest $32 million Floyd Mayweather Jr. ever made. Marcos Maidana did everything Saturday night but beat Mayweather, taking him 12 tough rounds before losing a majority decision. Mayweather remained unbeaten, but not by much. Maidana swarmed all over him from the opening bell and gave him perhaps his toughest fight in a 16-year professional career.

Amir Khan vowed to be impressive in his first welterweight fight, and he was. Khan knocked Luis Collazo down three times Saturday night on his way to a lopsided decision win he needed desperately if he hopes to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. In his first fight in more than a year, Khan dominated against a former champion while looking sharp at his new weight. Khan lost out to Marcos Maidana to fight Mayweather, but made the best out of his spot at the top of the undercard for the Mayweather-Maidana card by beating and bloodying Collazo.

De La Hoya vows to run Golden Boy in dispute (The Associated Press)

Boxing News - Sat, 05/03/2014 - 19:23
Declaring himself in the fight of his life as he battles addiction issues, Oscar De La Hoya said Saturday he was also prepared to fight to keep control of his boxing promotion company. The former boxer said Golden Boy Promotions is still his company, despite his fractured relationship with chief executive officer Richard Schaefer over his ties to Floyd Mayweather Jr. and De La Hoya's recent efforts to reconcile with rival promoter Bob Arum. ''I have my vision and I have my plans,'' De La Hoya said. The company isn't called Golden Boy for nothing.'' De La Hoya spoke publicly for the first time about problems in his company, one of the two major promoters in boxing, in a hastily called press conference a few hours before Mayweather fought Marcos Maidana.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is enough of a businessman to know his latest fight would be a tough sell, especially after setting records with Canelo Alvarez his last time out. But sell he must, even though oddsmakers and nearly everyone else give Marcos Maidana little chance in their welterweight title fight Saturday night. A full house is already guaranteed at the MGM Grand hotel arena, but Mayweather needs people at home to pay $64.95 for the fight if he is going to recoup his guaranteed $32 million purse. So Mayweather hinted this week that this might be his last fight, though few in boxing believe that.

Unbeaten Mayweather says Maidana no pushover (Reuters)

(Reuters) - All the signs indicate that five-division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. will comfortably maintain his unbeaten record when he faces Argentina's Marcos Maidana on Saturday, though the American is not expecting a "pushover." Mayweather, who has a 45-0 record with 26 knockouts, is an overwhelming 11-1 favorite for the WBC/WBA welterweight title unification bout which will be staged at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Not only is the experienced American widely regarded as one of the best defensive fighters of all time but he is a natural welterweight whereas many critics believe that Maidana moved up too quickly from the 130-pound level to the 147-pound division. "Everybody thinks he's just going to be a pushover, but I don't think so," Mayweather, 37, told reporters while preparing for Saturday's showdown. "Hopefully he will make me bring out my 'A' game because my whole career all I had to use was a 'D' and 'C' game to beat every guy." Maidana, who won his most recent bout in December with a unanimous decision against the heavily favored American Adrien Broner to claim the WBA welterweight title, is known for his all-round skill and blistering power.

Amir Khan got a fight in the weight division he wanted and on the card he wanted. A loser in the sweepstakes to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr., Khan had to settle for the next best thing: A spot on top of the undercard Saturday night in Mayweather's welterweight title fight against Marcos Maidana. ''I would have loved to fight Floyd Mayweather, but I believe it's really for the best,'' Khan said. ''It gives me a chance to get to 147 and feel my way.'' Khan moves up to welterweight to fight former champion Luis Collazo in a fight that will do more than just test his ability at the higher weight.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. was talking about his latest baubles, perhaps because even he finds them more interesting than his latest opponent. There's the new Bugatti in the garage, a $1.6 million gift from the MGM Grand hotel for selling out his fight Saturday night with Marcos Maidana. And the $400,000 Rolex that Mayweather has been eyeing the last few years, which the hotel bought him the same day it hosted Manny Pacquiao's last fight. There can be trouble with employees like the one who couldn't make Mayweather's coffee right in the days before his last fight and had to be let go.
